Small Business Owners Beware: The Ultimate Guide to Spotting & Avoiding Scams in Your Inbox and DMs

🎯 How to Spot & Avoid Scams as a Small Business Owner

Running a small business is hard enough without having to dodge scam messages left and right — but unfortunately, scammers have leveled up in 2025. Whether it’s a sketchy “Shopify Support” email threatening account suspension or a shady DM promising “10,000 REAL followers,” online hustlers are getting bolder, sneakier, and more aggressive.

As someone who has personally had to tear down and rebuild a website thanks to a scammer, I’m sharing everything I wish I knew sooner — so you don’t fall for the same tricks.

🚩 Common Red Flags to Watch For

Scammers love to pretend they’re from legitimate platforms like Shopify, Meta, or TikTok. Here's what to look for:

  • Fake emails from “Shopify Support” saying your trademark is missing or your account is under review. They’ll ask you to “reply immediately” or “click here to avoid shutdown.”
  • "Premium Shopify themes” offered by developers you’ve never heard of. These often violate copyright and can get your site shut down months later — exactly what happened to me.
  • Fake Meta/IG copyright violation emails asking you to “verify ownership” or “submit an appeal” via suspicious-looking links.
  • Dumb technical lingo that makes no sense — scammers try to sound official but often fail miserably. If someone throws around words like “SSL protocol propagation delay,” you’re probably being scammed.
  • Aggressive tone when you push back. If they get defensive or belittling, that's a huge red flag.

🧃 DM Scams: Instagram, TikTok & Threads

Here’s a non-exhaustive list of classic DM scripts that scammers send:

  • “Hi. I saw your store. Very nice products. I have 5M network and I can give you 10K REAL followers 😍😍. Guaranteed 💯. Send me your best pics for promotion.”
  • “Do you ship to Texas, USA?” (yes, they really think this works)
  • “Can I have your store link?”
  • “Are you the owner? I’m a Shopify expert. I can increase your conversions 3000%.”

They'll often pretend to be influencers, theme developers, or business consultants. Once they get a response, they push hard to get you to pay via CashApp, PayPal, Venmo, or some shady checkout link.

💸 The Real Cost of Falling for It

I learned the hard way:

  • I accepted help for a “premium theme” that sounded legit. Later, I found out it was pirated and could’ve gotten my whole store removed. I had to completely rebuild my website.
  • I paid someone for “promotion” with 100% real followers. The followers were clearly bots. It boosted my numbers, but destroyed engagement — which told the Instagram algorithm my content was low quality.
  • I was lucky to go through Fiverr and get refunded. If I had used PayPal or Venmo, that money would’ve been gone forever.

🛡️ How to Protect Yourself

  • ✅ Always verify suspicious emails by logging in to your Shopify, Meta, or other accounts directly — don’t click links.
  • ✅ Don’t trust anyone offering “real followers,” “theme upgrades,” or “conversion audits” via DM.
  • ✅ Use the official Shopify Theme Store and App Store only.
  • ✅ Trust your gut — if it sounds too good to be true, it is.
  • ✅ Keep screenshots and report scams to the platform or FTC.

🤝 You’re Not Alone

If you’ve ever felt stupid for falling for a scam — don’t. These scammers are professionals, and they use the same scripts on hundreds of people every day. You’re not alone, and the more we talk about it, the fewer small business owners they can fool.

Let’s keep our community educated, safe, and scam-free. 💻🧠
